Hey guys I’m Henry, and as do most of you I’m sure – I love traveling and taking
photos. Over the last year I’ve become slightly addicted to Instagram. Not just
because it’s a great way to share my photos but also because it’s a great platform to
meet like minded people and to find great places to photograph while traveling.
I’m a big fan of Louis and the ‘Live the Adventure’ team, so I’m stoked to be able to
share some tips about taking great Instagrams whilst traveling around the world. I’m
definitely not an expert, but I’ve learnt a lot from other photographers so I thought I
could share some of my tips. Photography is certainly something that you can
continuously improve, no matter what level you are at. So have a look at my tips
below, and if you like my photos, and say hello!
What gear, tools and apps I use
My main camera is a Canon EOS 600D, but I also use a GoPro for any photos in or
around the water.
I use Lightroom to edit all of my Instagrams before sending them to my phone. This
of course means that I need to have a laptop with me when traveling, but I just feel
that Lightroom gives me the best edits. The VSCO app is a great alternative if you
just want to use your phone. The results from manually editing the photos within the
Instagram app itself can also be great if you want to make it as quick as possible.
My 5 Tips for Better Instagram’s
1.Include a person
Including something extra into your photos adds another element to your photos,
making them more interesting to look at. Having a person in your photos is the best
way to do this. This is easy if you’re traveling with someone, but if you’re by yourself,
don’t be afraid to involve the locals!
2.Don’t over edit
Go easy on the filters. Part of the reason why I choose to use Lightroom is because
it allows me to softly adjust the photos on a bigger screen, rather than making
drastic changes on my iPhone. Personally, I find the most appealing photos are the
ones which appear as natural as possible. Editing photos is one of the most fun
parts about taking photos, but I try to keep them as simple as possible.
3.Play around with the focus
Changing the focus of a photo is the most powerful way to change an image. A
simple change from foreground to background focus can make a big difference!
4.Use different objects
If you want to make your photos stand out from the rest, think outside the box. Using
different elements and objects is a great way to do this. For example, I love using my
iPhone for reflections. Something as simple as using your phone in your
photographs can make them stand out from all of the other travel photos on
5.Different angles, get low, or high
My final tip for taking the best Instagrams while traveling is to try different angles.
Think about it this way, 90% of people traveling will take the same photo from the
same angle. Even something as simple as taking the photo from as low as possible
can make a huge difference
